Duplicate Albums

I think i've seen like 4 of one album in particular
AdminPosted on 11/29/2014 at 10:23 PM
Yeah, I know. I don't disallow duplicates because there may be a theoretical point in the future of the site where it would be REALLY HARD to find an album to draw. I want people to be able to draw all of their favorites even if they've been drawn a gorillion times before.

Would there be any way to put all the duplicates under one entry, so that there's no chance of getting a million copies of No Love Deep Web when hitting Random Albums?

No Love Deep Web, Stratosphere and Sunbather are definitely the most overused

Pretty much no. That would require HUGE amounts of redesign on the underlying database. Hopefully duplicate albums don't become too big of a problem. To discourage duplicates, users can only guess an album one time, so a person who draws No Love Deep Web for the hundredth time will not get much love for it (hehe, puns).SebenPosted on 12/1/2014 at 6:25 PM

how about reporting duplicates, and justifying said reports by linking the originals?

Nah. Duplicates aren't against the rules, and reports should only be for rule violations.HamPosted on 12/8/2014 at 6:39 PM

So that's what that album is. Looks so much like Earth 2strongbadPosted on 12/8/2014 at 8:04 PM
Perhaps we should have a temporally banned list, similar to the joke life preserve on /r/polandball. Then if an album is getting drawn way to much we can stop the drawings, and then later let it back into the wild.
If thats to extreme for you, just a list of frequently drawn albums to avoid on the Draw page would probably help immensely.noname219Posted on 12/8/2014 at 10:47 PM
Some sort of database where the duplicate entries could be linked in some ways would be beneficial for the website. Admin : I sent you a PM on FFR about this, but I'll explain here too :
For example, No Love Deep Web has 7 drawings but they would constitute only 1 entry. There would also be a possibility to have alternate titles so if someone types it wrong (because of how it was written by the submitter), a moderator could add the alternte title into the entry. If it's possible, once the player has guessed the album, it would be possible for him to see all drawing for the same album (as suggested by idolisdead on the forum). This make it impossible for players to use exploits to get around rule #2 (Knowingly guessing multiple versions of the same album).roryPosted on 12/9/2014 at 12:35 AM
What's stopping everyone here from drawing No Love Deep Web etc themselves? I mean yeah, it defeats the purpose of the game, and everyone will be really disappointed if it happened, but it's completely within the rules.

@noname219 It's a really good idea in theory to combine all the duplicates into one entry, but runs into a few technical challenges:
-Determining duplicates without human intervention would be tricky; you'd have to ask people to enter every possible variation of the title and artist that they could think of. Otherwise, "Lou Reed & Metallica" would not trigger a match with "Metallica & Lou Reed".
-All of the code running the site (ALL OF IT) operates under the assumption that an album has exactly one artist and one title, not referencing any other albums or additional artist/title entries. So, changing that aspect would involve basically a whole rewrite of a large portion of the backend, which I don't really feel like doing after several months of working on the site pre-launch.
As I said, it's a good idea and it will remain under consideration, but the chances of me implementing it in the near future are nil.
@Strongbad I'd rather not tell people to what they can and can't draw, but if things ever got out of hand, some kind of blacklist wouldn't be a terrible idea.
