PNG Files Too Big

1
  • I drew an album cover that was only 450x450, but the file was about 300 kB when finished (probably from lots of colors and transparency? Not too sure how file size is determined besides image resolution).

So anyway, the only way I could figure out how to get it down to 200 kB was to size it down to 300x300, but then of course the image loses a good bit of quality. Is there a better way to get around this issue? Why don't we also allow jpg for image compression without much loss in quality?

    The album in question:

    http://optimizilla.com/

    These usually help.

  • I don't allow JPGs because I want to the file types across the site to be consistent, and the built-in drawing program generates PNGs. Of course, I screwed that up already by thinking I was saving albums as PNGs when I was actually saving them as JPGs. See blog for more embarrassing details.

The links Saltbearer posted should help. The GIMP also allows for PNG compression when saving to that file type.
