Site's Longevity

1
  • This post is mostly for the admin to consider, but if anyone has anything to suggest feel free.
So I've been on the site for a while now and I've noticed a few things about the site that I think discourage activity from a large portion of users.
The first thing I want to say I believe has already been mentioned in another thread; there are a lot of repeat albums being uploaded. I realize that disallowing this is not feasible if you wish for the site to grow, but allowing the pool of album drawings to become over-saturated with duplicate albums will ultimately result in older users running out of ways to earn points. My suggestion for this issue is to give the first user who submits a totally new album a number of points over what they would earn if they had submitted a duplicate (ie 150 vs 100).
Another difficulty I see in the sites development is non-returning users. The only direct way I can think of gaining return users is to reward them for coming back on a regular basis, each time a little greater than the last until it reaches a certain number, for example 20 or 25, where it will remain until the user misses a day, at which point the reward would be lowered by 5 points or so until it returns to 1, this number could possibly be added to the number of points a user earns for guessing and drawing. The less direct way I can think of to attract returners is to give new players a few more points for the things they do in the beginning then slowly have it drop back to 100 at which point, hopefully, the points they get for consecutive login days will make it seem like the user is still getting the number they had early on.
I really cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you find ways to get more people to create albums, both for maintaining the frequent users and attracting new users, especially since the name of the website is "Guess That Album".

  • I hope this was even a little helpful to you, Admin, keep in mind these are just suggestions, you by no means have to follow them. One thing I'm strongly in favor of, though, especially given how bad (no offense) the server is, is adding a way to donate, a little money can go a long way for this site.

  • another idea is to make some kind of daily challenge that would maybe work like this:

every 24h user gets a random, unique to him album to draw and drawing it will give him bonus points

of course some kind of gigantic database would have to be used/made

I dont know now it sounds kinda stupid

  • There does seem to be a problem with getting people to stay long-term. By long-term, I mean for a period of months, since a lot of users do stay active for a week or so before leaving. That indicates that the concept of the site is sound and that people want to use it, but that there isn't enough here to make people into long-term users.

The point value for drawing an album should probably be higher. I was initially worried about a flood of low-quality albums when I set the point value at 100, but that doesn't seem to be a concern. I think around half of the albums on the site were drawn in the first month.

The idea of rewarding returning users is good. There has to be some way of encouraging activity outside of the intrinsic enjoyment people get out of drawing and guessing albums. Awarding bonus points for regular visitors would be one way to do that.

Miklo's idea of a daily challenge is also something I've thought about. The daily leaderboards are a start in that direction. I considered offering rewards for being in the top three for a day, maybe expanding into a "badge" system where you get badges (and points) for doing certain things on the site (being first to guess an album, guessing an album that hasn't been guessed for over two months, reaching point total milestones, hitting the top 100, etc.).

What I would really like to do is some kind of head-to-head challenge system. My (half-baked) idea would be to show each user the same twenty or so random albums, regardless of whether any of them had already been guessed by either user, and the person who gets the most correct is the winner. Then, everybody would have a win-loss record on their profile and probably a skill rating as well (obviously, you would also get points for winning the challenge).

  • One suggestion for the flood of unguessed albums: how about rewarding like 50 points or something, regardless of the "regular" points you would get? This way I don't need to see 10 NLDWs every time I go for random albums. Right now all these albums are unable to be guessed and they're just sitting there and frankly it's a bit annoying.

  • NLDWs?

  • >NLDWs?

It's an acronym for an album that everybody on this site is really tired of.

An idea brought on by Wolf's post is to have the option to "hide" albums, so that you never see them while looking at the random albums page. That way, you can hide the duplicates if you're so inclined. Would people want that feature?

  • Maybe something like highest amount of points scored in one day leaderboards, to make people more competitive?
I like the head-to-head and the "hide" option
Maybe divide by genres and add the option of hints?(each hint discounting a few points of the reward)

  • What I imagine keeps people returning is their desire to explore. I stopped using the site for a month or so after I felt like I had guessed everything I knew, and not many new albums were being made.

A consistent flow of new albums would keep people coming back, I think. I find it a little disappointing when I log in after being offline for two days and find that three of my albums are still considered "new albums." This will usually keep me offline for a time. OR I will make a bunch of albums in hope to spark some activity. ;)

So making new albums. I think that should be rewarded. And receiving favorites on albums, too, so that will encourage some creativity. Heck, I'll throw in the idea that being favorited as a user should merit even more points, too. (Sidenote: GiggerNits favorited me recently, and I flipped, 'cause I'm a huge fan) Also consider giving extra points for drawing albums that have not been done by anyone before. But the flaw I can see in this is people finding their way around the idea by titling a certain old rock group's album "IV", "ZoSo", "[untitled]" or whatever hasn't been used to gain more points.

Daily leaderboard folk being rewarded would be a good idea, but not the overall leaderboard. I think rewarding even more points to those who already have the most points on the site is just redundant and to a small extent just unfair.

Trying to remember what the rest of these comments were saying...
YES. Hiding albums would be an excellent feature.
