some of the covers i see on here are mad funny or just real creative and its fun guessing and testing my music knowledge why is this site practically dead it feels like
maxhubrexPosted on 11/18/2023 at 6:01 AM
It comes in waves. It's actually been pretty active of late.
vsaucemichaelPosted on 11/19/2023 at 1:11 PM
sorry I only post like once a month, but if you want more users then you need to spread the word
exploderfallsPosted on 11/20/2023 at 10:23 AM
i feel like some features could be improved too idk like at some point i can see maybe veteran users don't want to return cause theres a point where you don't know any of the new albums drawn or you've guessed them already, but thats besides the fact that this site isnt exactly the best thing to spend spare time on ig

fwiw i've been on here for 6 years, and while i've never been *super* active, i've been able to maintain a decent consistency for most of that time. i've honestly grown to appreciate the limitations of this site, because it puts the onus on you as a user to expand your music knowledge if you want to get more points. and ultimately, i think the fact that this site isn't doing everything in its power to keep you on it is a huge plus. there's so many ways to get the quick number-go-up dopamine hit that finding something that's willing to be challenging at the risk of losing some people is increasingly rare. that's not to say you have to like it — i certainly didn't when i started — but i think it's sometimes good to analyze why we seek certain things (like frequent "winability") and whether it's actually indicative of a good experience.
it's also worth noting this site never really *feels* active in the same way other sites do. you might notice the number of new albums wax and wane on a day-to-day basis, but unless you're actively counting new posts or keeping track of the daily leaderboards, the site's activity will always seem relatively consistent despite never appearing like much is happening. again, i see this as more of a feature than a bug especially since there's already 9 years worth of posts to go through.MistermetalPosted on 11/20/2023 at 5:45 PM
I honestly think not knowing many albums keeps veteran users wanting to expand their music knowlage and be better at guessing albums as blehe38 said

inviting more users will get short term and long term users. short term users may draw the same albums we’ve seen dozens of times but they also have a lot of available guesses that they haven’t used up before. long term users will draw higher quality or more niche albums but can only guess each album once. I think you need steady flow of both to coexist

honestly since I've joined this site (two years, I think), I've spent a lot of time digging through random bins at record stores + looking up album art for bands I've heard mentioned in passing. it gives me a lot more stuff to draw, + the completely petty joy of recognizing an album you've seen a million times + finally being able to put a name to it is pretty much unsurpassed. this is a nonsense hobby + I love it.
exploderfallsPosted on 11/20/2023 at 9:57 PM
yeah i get what you guys are saying it is nice having that feeling of guessing this one album or whatever and this kind of site i guess is bound to be niche, and like blehe38 said its probably for the best that this site isn't like all others trying to suck the life out of you, just a fun pastime not to be taken super seriously

As other people mentioned, "activity" is a weird metric on this site. People could be guessing tons of albums all day but it still wouldn't "feel" active other than looking at the leaderboard or looking at the "recent guesses" page. This forum doesn't see much in the way of general discussion, but forum posts is one way that the average internet user uses to gauge site activity, so the site seems inactive.
I've pretty much stopped advertising this site so I only get traffic from people organically sharing it (plus some search engine traffic). It's such a niche site that it would be hard to market in any conventional way. Plus, I'm just a programmer/music lover, not a marketer. And now I kind of like how it's become a weird little community of total nerds, untouched by modern internet trends.
The typical progression arc for an enthusiastic new user is to guess a bunch of albums for like a week, then, having exhausted the albums they can easily guess, either leave and never come back, or only come back once in a while to guess a few from the "newly drawn" list. Retention is higher for users who enjoy drawing albums, but retention will never be good for users who only guess.
I want to start a Discord server as a place to discuss the site and just music in general. Hopefully having a Discord would help with member retention a little bit. Obviously it wouldn't do anything to attract new users.
Sorry this is a bit of a ramble, I love that people are sharing their thoughts and still enjoying the site after almost a decade!exploderfallsPosted on 11/20/2023 at 10:41 PM
thanks for sharing, i think for me the first thing i seemed to see was a lack of incoming drawn albums i suppose, and then when i looked at the forum it did seem kind of dead, and now looking back, like maxhubrex said it definitely comes in waves, and it's just hard to measure at the end of the day; i'm trying not to fall into that progression arc, and drawing albums is pretty fun when you decide to make something either high effort or funny or creative in a way.

I'd probably join if you made a server
MistermetalPosted on 11/22/2023 at 1:57 AM
