Bands changing names

This is a bit of a weird question, but I want to know what you guys do for bands that go through name changes?
I saw an album cover of 'Thee Oh Sees' and didn't know that they changed their names to 'Osees.'
'The Cult' is obviously a huge band, but they used to be 'Southern Death Cult' and have an album on spotify under that name.
It's not a huge deal but when you guys draw an album do you put the artist name as what it was at the time of drawing the cover, or their name at the time of the album releasing?vsaucemichaelPosted on 2/8/2022 at 3:59 AM
idk i still call them the dixie chicks

I usually use the name of the artist at the time of the release. But labels will often reissue old stuff with the new name so that can complicate things.

i use the newer name unless the old one is more well known for that album. i.e. something like AJJ i'd use AJJ. but for Godspeed You! Black Emperor's mysterious exclamation mark i'd do it based on what was on the release

I mean frankly that's why I've avoided drawing Laura Jane Grace's first solo e.p because using her deadname there makes the most sense as that's whats on the cover but as a trans person I'm uncomfortable doing that

I try and specify in the drawing, "use old band name" or whatever. Same as I do for bands with colloquial and full names.
