Scoring Suggestions
AdminPosted on 11/17/2014 at 9:45 AM
As this site is still in beta, I welcome suggestions on how to improve the basic scoring system I have in place (100 points per correct guess, 100 points per album drawn).
Should the point value of an album go down as more people guess it? Should users be able to choose the point value of an album based on how difficult it is? So many ideas!SebenPosted on 11/22/2014 at 12:17 PM
Yep, the value of albums should be lower as more people guess them.
Also, disable scores by simply drawing an album. You can virtually draw any one that only you know (BANDCAMP?) and win infinite points that way. Or use some sort of system like in Topsters/BillClintonSwag to recognize existing albums and avoid spam.AdminPosted on 11/22/2014 at 6:34 PM
Thanks for the input. I want to incentivize the drawing of albums, at least at the beginning, which is why they are worth points. I don't know if it's "abuse" to draw obscure bandcamp albums. I guess if somebody does start doing that, then I'll have to address it somehow.
I'm pondering lowering the point value by one each time somebody correctly guesses an album, to a minimum of ten. Any changes I make won't be retroactive, though, so everybody who guessed albums before that point would get their full 100 points.CardsOfWarPosted on 11/24/2014 at 12:47 PM
As I said on the Metal Archives: (But you may not have seen it)
May I perhaps make a suggestion towards the scoring system of the site?
I think it would be a good idea to, rather than giving people points for drawing an album cover, give some monthly (Or weekly, or daily, or whatever time increment you like) amount of points based on the percentage of the guesses submitted to that album that were correct in that month. That way, people would be incentivised to draw well, and punished for accidentally terrible drawings.
Also, for the record, I disagree with decreasing the prize based on the number of correct guesses already out for that album.

Sorry for doublepost, but I have another suggestion:
I think that each time any particular album is drawn, the amount of points gained for drawing that particular album should go down. This would make it harder for people to do shit drawings purely in order to get points.AdminPosted on 11/24/2014 at 9:03 PM
CardsOfWar, would you mind giving your reasons for not wanting to decrease the point value as albums get guessed more often? Not trying to start anything, just curious. Lowering the points awarded after each guess encourages people to be active on the site (to get first dibs on new albums) and to guess albums that don't have as many guesses.
The issue I see with your first suggestion is that it might encourage users to draw albums that are extremely easy, that nobody could possibly miss, so as to achieve a good correct/incorrect ratio and get the maximum amount of points. To be fair, though, I have yet to think of a good way to change the value of drawing an album to emphasize the things I want to emphasize (high-quality drawings, perhaps less-well-known albums).
Your second suggestion is a good one, and I'll keep it mind. The problem is, I don't have a good way of detecting duplicates; as people have noticed with guesses, just checking if the artist and title are equal usually isn't enough.CardsOfWarPosted on 11/24/2014 at 10:45 PM
I disagree with decreasing the point value with each correct guess, because once it gets to a certain point, it will just discourage new people from coming to the site. You'd have a bunch of really active regulars who had already drawn every album they're going to, and that snap up each new album in 10 minutes. The site would be infinitely more inviting if everybody had the same pool of albums to score points with, and a new user had a chance at being on the leaderboard with enough time playing the game, (i.e. the way it is now) than if all the albums had already been snapped up, and new users only had a few different things they could score reasonable amounts of points with. If you were to implement the change we're discussing, however, I seriously think it would need to be less drastic than 10 less points every time somebody guesses right. Something like 1 point off each time, to a minimum of 50.
Perhaps my first suggestion was a bit stupid, but I still think there should be some way to incentivise quality drawings...
That said, great work on the site! it all works smoothly and is a whole lot of fun to use.roryPosted on 11/24/2014 at 11:46 PM
I have a suggestion. Could we have the ability to guess an album we got wrong again? Instead of being labeled forever as getting those albums wrong. Obviously you'd get less points for a second or a third guess, too. Maybe a fraction of 100 each time. And that would help to stop everyone from only having points in increments of 100.

The thing about that though is that when you do get it wrong, then it tells you the answer. That would have to be changed somehow.
